After the continued success of the school supply assistance program – Back to School Fiesta, The Barnabas Connection has developed a pilot program for education assistance initially based at Scudder Primary. The program, Best BUDS, aims to match local community members with WISD students focusing on educational assistance for children struggling with reading and math.

The program focuses on the themes of building understanding, and developing students (BUDSBest BUDS grew out of Barnabas volunteers seeking to do more lasting work with students after the annual Back to School Fiesta. After a day of distributing school supplies, backpacks and other essentials there was a desire to channel the volunteering energy into long term assistance knowing that successful education leads to a better life. Reading proficiency by the third grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. Yet every year, more than 80% of low-income children miss this crucial milestone.

Best BUDS mentors will assist in individual and classroom learning with focus on math and reading which has shown to be an important marker in childhood educational  development. To be successful on state standardized testing, students need to have confident and comprehensive reading skills by the third grade. The development of strong reading skills can be challenged by students that struggle in the conventional school setting or that face setbacks outside of the classroom. The Barnabas Connection hopes that through mentoring and one on one learning assistance provided by Best BUDS, we can help bridge the educational gap for these students.

Those interested in volunteering for Barnabas Connection Best BUDS can attend an interest meeting at Scudder Primary on September 14th at 9:30 AM. Volunteers will volunteer an hour a week to be with Scudder students.  Those volunteering with the program will be required to complete background checks and will receive ongoing training and support.
